What data does K-Stra include?
Everything an analysis can return, with its source, its reference year and how often it is updated.
K-Stra’s data catalogue for Australia combines ABS population, census, income and spending statistics with a monthly places catalogue of businesses, property listings and any file you upload. Official statistics are spread onto 14.5 million address points and updated annually, businesses and listings monthly, and every table in the app carries its source and year.
What population and family data does K-Stra include?
Population, sex and age come from the latest official annual estimates. Everything else about residents and families comes from the 2021 Census, the only source that measures it.

Not available for Australia. Births, deaths and migration balances and family trends are not published for these areas, so K-Stra does not show them for Australia. Residents are counted by country of birth, not by citizenship.

How does K-Stra measure income and spending?
Two indices put every area on the same scale, where 100 is the Australian average. Spending in dollars is then calculated for any area from national accounts coefficients, so no figure is stored ready-made.

Not available for Australia. Household spending is not surveyed below state level, so the consumption index is calculated from income rather than measured. Income classes and business establishments are not available for Australia.
Source note in the app: Income index from ABS Personal Income (ATO/LEED) 2023 where measured, K-Stra estimate elsewhere; 100 = Australian average. Spending per head = the area’s consumption index × ABS national accounts coefficients (5204.0, FY2024-25).
What does K-Stra know about businesses and competitors?
More than 2 million Australian businesses and stores, from the K-Stra places catalogue updated every month (October 2026), searchable by sector or by brand. For each sector, a spending model estimates demand, supply and opportunity at every inhabited address.

Where do the property values come from?
Australia has no official register of property values by zone, so K-Stra estimates them from sale and rental listings. Values are aggregated by postcode, and every sample states how many listings it rests on.

Which areas can an analysis use?
Nine Australian administrative levels, from the whole country to the SA1 statistical area, plus the level that makes the difference: the single address.
| ABS code | Level | Areas | Boundaries | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AUS | Country | 1 | ASGS Ed. 3 | Australia |
| STE | States and territories | 10 | 2021 | New South Wales |
| SA4 | Statistical Area Level 4 | 108 | 2021 | Sydney – Eastern Suburbs |
| LGA | Local government areas | 566 | 2024 | Woollahra |
| POA | Postcodes | 2,644 | 2021 | 2028 |
| SA3 | Statistical Area Level 3 | 359 | 2021 | Eastern Suburbs – North |
| SAL | Suburbs and localities | 15,353 | 2021 | Double Bay |
| SA2 | Statistical Area Level 2 | 2,473 | 2021 | Double Bay – Darling Point |
| SA1 | Statistical Area Level 1 | 61,845 | 2021 | An 11-digit statistical area code |
| Address | Address points | 14,533,323 | Overture Maps | A single street number |
Area codes are the official ABS codes, so any K-Stra area can be matched with the original publication. All nine levels are in the data and can be imported into My Data; on the map, the labels follow the zoom from states down to suburbs.
Of the 14.5 million address points, 8.9 million have at least one resident. A travel band adds up the addresses it reaches, so its edge passes between one street number and the next instead of cutting a statistical area in half.
Address points from Overture Maps; residents spread with ABS data (K-Stra territory v5, 30 September 2026). Levels as of 30 September 2026.
How do you know the numbers add up?
Spreading a figure onto addresses must not create or lose anyone. On 14 September 2026 the address-level population was summed council by council across Australia: all 545 councils with address points returned the official figure exactly, with a largest gap of 0 people.
The national total is 2,490 people short of the official estimate. They are the residents of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, whose address map has not been loaded — a missing piece of map, stated openly rather than smoothed over.

Questions about the data
How often is the data in K-Stra updated?
Businesses and property listings are refreshed every month. Official statistics change once a year at most, when the Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes a new edition; census variables change every five years. When newer data arrives, a saved analysis tells you so and offers to update it.
How can figures be at address level when the census counts areas?
Each area’s figures are spread onto its addresses in proportion to how many people each building can house, estimated from the road network and the size of the building. The census gives the shape inside each statistical area; the council’s latest estimate gives the total.
Why don’t the SA4 areas of a state add up to the state total?
Because they describe different years. States, councils, postcodes and suburbs carry the 2024 population estimate; SA1 to SA4 areas keep the 2021 Census count. The gap between the two is population growth, not an error.
Is the income index measured or estimated?
Measured wherever ABS publishes personal income: 543 councils and most SA2 areas. Elsewhere a K-Stra model estimates it. Tested against the measured councils, the model reaches a correlation of 0.49 and an average error of 10.3 index points, so it is used to rank areas, never in place of a measured value.
Where do I see the source of a number in the app?
Next to the title of every results table, with the year of the most recent data in it. Hovering over it shows the full source note, which is saved with the analysis together with its results.
Can I download the figures for a whole administrative level?
Yes. Import the areas of any of the nine levels into My Data with the figures you choose, then export them for free. The import costs 1 credit per 10,000 rows plus 1 credit per 1,000 values; the boundaries themselves stay in the app and are not exported.
